Dan St. Jacques

Currently lead singer of The Hammer Party.

It’s easy to consider the life Dan led as one of myth. Some of this legacy has been corroborated in print. Whether it’s Sam McPheeters’(Born Against, The Men’s Recovery Project) Mutations: The Many Strange Faces of Hardcore Punk which details one of the most disturbing performances of his career. Or the award winning comic artist Justin Hall’s True Travel Tales Vol. 1 where names and faces were altered to preserve the innocent, but ostensibly is the true tale as told by John Dwyer(Osees) of the show Landed played opening for Men’s Recovery Project, where Dan set himself on fire. The video documentation doesn’t provide enough detail of the ensuing chaos nor the charred aftermath, but you can get the idea.

Since 1990 Dan has been playing in bands that have always had conviction, grit and intensity that have garnered him and those bands the opportunities to share bills with the likes of Babes in Toyland, Godbullies, Lightning Bolt, Suicide, Arab on Radar, Osees and Tropical Fuck Storm to name a few.

The legend and the punk rock ethos is what has given Dan not only credibility but respect throughout the community. So much so that even Lightning Bolt has immortalized him through the song and music video he is the namesake of, “Saint Jacques”.

The artistic life can be hectic, especially for an artist as prolific as Dan. Having to start as many bands as he’s been in(official count is 12!), writing, recording, touring, repeat, that many times over these few years, it’s surprising that he even managed to obtain his bachelor’s in cultural anthropology which you might hear smatterings of throughout The Hammer Party's catalog, but particularly in their latest single, Tiamat's Revenge. For those unfamiliar with Tiamat, in Mesopotamian mythology, she was the goddess of the Salt Sea and the embodiment of primordial chaos. A fitting subject for the chaotic and apocalyptic single and the B side improvised reprise.
